Fringe benefits are typically offered by management as a nice way to provide incentives to employees. Whether offered as a reward for good performance or an incentive to achieve sales goals, Some fringe benefits are taxable, while others need not be reported or taxed below certain values. Do you know which ones are which?
While this may sound melodramatic, it’s no laughing matter if you improperly reported - even by mistake - fringe benefits. And unfortunately, employment tax audits of fringe benefits have increased both from the federal and state sides.
Learning Objectives:
This audio conference will help you to determine if your fringe benefits are currently being offered to employees correctly. That is, to insure that they are compliant with federal and state payroll tax regulations that may assist you in avoiding a costly audit in the future.
We’ll cover the IRS guidelines for the items that they will focus on when an employment tax audit is being performed, as well as tips on how to perform your own internal review to catch anything that may actually cause an audit. - Which fringe benefits are excludable?
- What record keeping is necessary to document these benefits?
- How do you compute the value of a ‘good’ or a ‘service’? And how do you handle the payroll tax consequences for those items considered taxable
- Which benefits provided to employees are taxable and how these are reported for payroll purposes
- How to calculate your exposure if you have some items that should have been considered wages subject to payroll taxation
