HR plays many roles in the organization. In the past, many were tactical or transactional, such as staffing, compensation, benefits, and labor relations.
Nowadays, organizations require key HR personnel to not just handle comp and benefits, but to act in a strategic role.
This includes understanding the environment, identifying the implications of the company direction, developing an HR strategy that supports the company, implementing change management processes, and finding ways to solve systemic organizational problems.
Making this transition requires that you enhance your skills in key areas so that you are not only able to perform effectively, but be seen by line executives, managers, and employees as "adding value" to the business.
This may mean a fundamental shift in the way the HR professionals interacts with line executives. It also means learning more about how the business operates, how the HR organization adds value, and when to apply key skills.
